Algae
Algae are in a very large category with the eukaryotic which are cells that contain nuclei. There are thousand of species of algae that range from microscopic organisms (microalgae) to seaweed (macroalgae). Algae are most often green, sometimes blue, and live in water or moist, damp areas, and can be found all over the world.
How do algae clean water?
Algae can reproduce fast given all the right nutrients. Farmers like a lot algae in their wastewater so it can start cleaning the water. Algae grow well in nutrient-rich waters, such as municipal wastewater sewages which they help purify. The process is that they consume pathogens in the water. Algae can store energy that can be used to produce biofuel. Like other plants, algae consume CO2 and release O2 for us to breathe.
Pros/Cons of algae:
i. Humans: Algae have benefits to humans as they produce about 70% of the air we breathe. They provide a large sector for aquatic food chains and support fisheries in oceans and inland that also benefits the economy.
ii. Environment: As mentioned before, algae produce a lot of oxygen for us and attracts biodiversity. But a disadvantage is a phenomenon called algae bloom. It is when there is an overpopulation of algae in water. It causes a discolouration of the water and has negative impacts to other organisms because it releases some bad toxins.
iii. Economy: A big benefit of algae of our economy is that they create a large job industry. Algae will create about 220,000 jobs by 2020 throughout Canada and the United States. Also, bio fuels are an economic alternative for gas for cars.
